Big Bone Lick
A Pleistocene salt lick where mastodons left bones in the mud — Kentucky’s window on deep time.
Big Bone Lick was a mineral spring where Pleistocene mastodons, mammoths, and ground sloths left bones in the mud while seeking salt. Native peoples and later explorers—including Christopher Gist—collected fossils here; Thomas Jefferson later studied specimens from the lick. The site became Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, one of Kentucky’s earliest windows on deep time and a waypoint for salt hunters on the Ohio frontier.
