Kentucky History Drive is a static site about Kentucky history. Story and map pages do not ask you to create an account. The site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are opened. When advertising is turned on, Google AdSense may set cookies and use similar identifiers to show and measure ads.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories people read. It doesn't identify you. You can opt out below.
Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-83G4SBQKT1) records the page address, the page title, and general
browser and device information such as language and screen size. On the main page, the map and stories
use a hash address (for example /#map or /#timeline/a-story). A page view is
sent when the page loads and when that hash changes. Google uses the IP address for an approximate
location and does not store the full IP address. When analytics cookies are allowed, a first-party
cookie can recognize a later visit in this browser.
Consent Mode is set before the tag runs:
- EEA, UK, and Switzerland. Ad storage, ad user data, ad personalization, and analytics storage start denied. AdSense Privacy & messaging asks before those are turned on. The tag waits briefly for a saved choice. If you do not consent, analytics cookies stay off. Google may still receive a cookieless ping.
- Other regions. Those storage types start granted.
- US states that require it. A state privacy message comes from the same AdSense Privacy & messaging tool.
You can opt out of Google Analytics in this browser with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. How Google handles information collected by its products is described in Google’s privacy policy.
Advertising cookies
Google and its advertising partners use cookies to serve ads, including personalized ads based on pages you have visited, and to measure how those ads perform. That can happen on this site only when an ad slot is actually filled.
Google describes this in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. Details on advertising cookies are in How Google uses cookies in advertising.
Opting out of personalized ads
You can turn off ad personalization in Google Ads Settings. That choice is tied to the browser or Google account you use there. Turning it off does not stop ads from appearing; it asks Google to show ads that are not based on your interests.
Consent in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, and US state messages
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are shown a consent message before personalized ads or analytics cookies. Visitors in US states that require it are shown a state privacy message. Both messages come from AdSense Privacy & messaging, which is Google’s certified consent-management platform for those regions. The message updates Google Consent Mode on the page. This site does not run a separate consent banner. Visitors shown a consent message can change their choice using the Privacy choices link, which appears in the footer when consent applies.
Drives and your location
The drive pages and the drive planner can use your location, but only if you tap “Use my location” and allow it in your browser. Nothing asks for it before then.
- Your position is kept in this browser tab’s memory only, to work out distances and plan stops. It is not saved on your device, not sent to us or anyone else, and never put in a page address or a maps link.
- Town and ZIP lookups use a list that comes with the page, so what you type stays in your browser.
- The drive pages and the planner do not load Google Analytics or ads. The only third-party requests are map tiles from CARTO (OpenStreetMap data) on the planner’s map.
- The Google Maps and Apple Maps buttons open those apps or sites with the drive’s stops only, not your starting point. What happens there is covered by Google’s or Apple’s privacy policy.
Other requests
Opening the map loads tiles from CARTO (OpenStreetMap data). The site stores your light or dark theme choice in local storage on this browser. Those requests are separate from advertising cookies.
