Capt. Abraham Lincoln on Long Run
The president’s grandfather—Capt. Abraham Lincoln (1744–1786), Augusta/Rockingham militia officer and tanner—bought rich Jefferson County land near Hughes’ Station on Floyd’s Fork (Long Run) and moved the family from Virginia in 1782.
In May 1786, while planting corn with sons Mordecai, Josiah, and young Thomas, he was shot from the timber. Mordecai ran for a rifle and killed the warrior reaching for Thomas; Josiah ran to the station for help.
Tradition places the grave at today’s Long Run Baptist Church cemetery near Eastwood—the story the future president said was “more strongly than all others imprinted” on his memory.
