Croley-Evans Site
On the Upper Cumberland in Knox County, Croley-Evans (15KX24) was a Mississippian town-and-mound complex.
A 1996 study by UK archaeologist Richard Jefferies and colleagues reports that its most intensive Mississippian occupation dates from about A.D. 1200 to 1450 by radiocarbon. The authors find that Upper Cumberland groups shared many traits with “mainstream” Mississippian groups to the south and west, but expressed them in ways that reflect the region’s peripheral location in the Southeast. The site was listed on the National Register in 1985 (address restricted).
