Annis Mound & Village
On the Green River’s Big Bend in Butler County, Annis (15Bt2 / 15Bt20) was a Middle Mississippian mound center of the early–mid 1300s.
UK’s WPA crew (1939–40) and Penn State (2002–04) mapped three expanding palisades (outermost ~4.5 acres with a bastion), 17 structures, and a 110-by-110-foot, 12-foot platform mound that shifted from chiefly residence to ritual summit and back. Labor estimates suggest the first mound stage could have taken as many as 5.5 days for 50 workers on five-hour days. A 9-acre portion joined the National Register in 1985.
