Carlston Annis Shell Mound
On the Green River floodplain in Butler County, Carlston Annis (15Bt5) is a Late Archaic shell midden about 300 by 350 feet and more than six feet thick, piled up beside a mussel shoal between roughly 3000 and 1000 BC.
WPA crews under William S. Webb dug nearly half an acre in 1940–41; later work by the Shell Mound Archaeological Project refined the picture. The site yielded hundreds of burials, dog burials, hearths, pestle caches, and deer-bone pins—evidence of repeated seasonal camps, not a one-night stop.
