Chiggerville (15Oh1)

On the Green River floodplain in Ohio County, the Late Archaic Chiggerville shell midden (roughly 3000–1000 BC) sits beside an old mussel shoal and runs more than four feet thick across a 170-by-350-foot spread.

University of Kentucky digs in 1938 and 2009 recovered thousands of artifacts plus 114 human burials, 17 dog burials, and dense hearths and pits—freshwater mussels, drum and catfish, turtles, acorns and hickory, and Saratoga-cluster points with distinctive Green River humped bannerstones.
