Newport at the Licking Mouth
Hubbard Taylor platted the Ohio–Licking point for the family; James Taylor Jr. settled in 1793, pushed Campbell County through in 1794, and on December 14, 1795 the General Assembly chartered Newport on Taylor land.
He named it for Admiral Christopher Newport of Jamestown fame, reserved a public square and riverfront common, and in 1803 sold the army five acres at the Licking mouth for what became Newport Barracks — the post that locked the town into the river trade.
