Taylorsville on Brashears Creek

In 1799, while the forks of Brashears Creek and the Salt River still sat in Shelby County, miller Richard Taylor asked the Shelby County Court to carve about sixty acres from his tract for a town; trustees George Cravinston, William Bridgewater, Robert Jeffries, Elijah Prewitt, and Isaac Ellis laid it out and named it for him.

Steamboats could push all the way up the Salt from the Ohio, which helped the site stick.

When Spencer County was created in 1824, Taylorsville became the seat and was incorporated in 1829—still a short hop from Bagdad and Shelbyville.
