Fox Farm (Mason County)

On a broad ridgetop near Mays Lick, Fort Ancient farmers lived at Fox Farm (15Ms1) from about 1300 into the mid-1600s—one of the longest-lived villages of its kind in the Ohio Valley.

Houses first ringed a plaza, then clustered around a large public building as population grew and floor plans stretched toward sixty feet. Residents planted corn, beans, and squash on the uplands, managed turkey harvests toward adult males to keep local flocks viable, and once curated eleven deer jaws as a ritual offering inside a house wall.
