Tinsley Hill: Mississippian town under Lake Barkley

Tinsley Hill (15Ly18), in Lyon County, is a late prehistoric stone-grave cemetery and village on the Cumberland.

Douglas W. Schwartz’s University of Kentucky report treats the cemetery. R. Berle Clay’s village excavation is a project of the Inter-Agency Archaeological Salvage Program, the federal work in river valleys before reservoirs. On the Cumberland in Lyon County, that reservoir is Lake Barkley.

The two tDAR records are citations rather than the reports themselves, and they locate the work in the county rather than at a dig-site coordinate. They do not state a mound count, a burial count, or a phase date, so those figures are left out. The map pin is a Lyon County point rounded to about ten kilometers. Precise site coordinates are not published.
