Jonathan Creek Mississippian center

On the west bank of the Tennessee River in Marshall County (site 15Ml4), Jonathan Creek was a fortified Mississippian town occupied roughly A.D. 1200–1300.

CCC crews working with the University of Kentucky excavated in 1940–42 before Kentucky Lake rose, recording platform and burial mounds, a plaza, multiple stockade lines with bastions, and remnants of some 70–89 houses in both single-post and wall-trench styles—evidence of a community built for defense and ritual.
