Twin Mounds Site

Near Barlow in Ballard County, just north of where the Ohio meets the Mississippi, Twin Mounds (15Ba2 / Nolan; village 15Ba14) was a Mississippian administrative center with two platform mounds around a plaza and a village midden up to about two meters thick.

Principal occupation ran about 1200–1450 CE (Dorena and Medley phases). It stood contemporary with Wickliffe Mounds a few miles southeast; as Wickliffe thinned around 1300, people appear to have shifted toward Twin Mounds. Excavations recovered a rare Cahokia-style flint-clay human effigy pipe carved from Missouri pipestone.
